Newbie question

Hi,

I am very new to this language.... I'm trying to understand the difference in some of the dialects that would be used in Northern Mindanao/Iligan region. So I know there is Tagalog, then Bisayan is a dialect? How does Cebuano fit in to this?

What is a person living in the Northern Mindanao area likely to speak?

Thanks!

The Answer

Bisaya commonly refers to all people in the Visayas Islands but the Visayan migrants of Nothern Mindanao speak a dialect called Sinugbuanon Mindanaoan which is based on Cebuano o Sugbuanon. Sinugbuanon o Sugbuanon is the mother tongue for the people of Cebu, Bohol, Samar, Leyte, Negros Occ,  Siquijor, Camiguin, and most the provinces of Mindanao.
