French girl wants to learn Bisaya! Palihug tabangi ko :)

Hi everyone! :)

I just came back to France after spending 8 amazing months in the Philippines, especially in Bohol. I literally LOVED my experience there! the landscapes, the people, their smiles!... so I learned a bit how to speak Bisaya. Pero hadlok ko nga kalimot ko tanan akong bisaya kay dugai wala practice ug gusto ko makahibalo mas daghang :) that's why I am here. I could also ask my friends but as I am a very curious person, I don't want to disturb them everyday, every hour.

For the vocabulary, I think the only and most efficient way is to learn the words by heart. Most of my questions are about your syntax, like how you build long and complex sentences?

Like how would you say:
1) My mother told me to come back home before midnight.
2) I don't know when the fiesta will start.

And how do you translate the following words and sentences:
- even if (he doesn't want to eat, even if we force him to)
- anyway (walay siya labot "anyway")
- unless (I will not go out tomorrow, unless the weather will be nice)
- besides (she is very kind. Besides, she is very smart)
- who (not "kinsa" but like: I hope there are people who can help me :) )

That's all my questions for now. Of course, nalipay kaayo ko kung gusto mo makahibalo French! So if you want to learn some, just tell me.

Daghang salamat sa advance!

Hope this isn't confusing

I'm really glad that I helped you May! :D I don't mind that you might still have alot of questions or so, because I'm just so happy to hear someone that they want to learn Bisaya XD I'm sorry I can't get over with that hahaha and I'm still new to this site.

Sorry for the run on with long comments haha. So here comes explanations ;D

1) 'Daw' means that it came from someone (which is your mom) or you've heard about it from anybody (like how gossips work). In gossips, it means that you've heard about an information but you're not so sure if it's really true or not but still tell it to others. And "Giignan ko sa akong mama" is translated as 'My mom told me' while 'I told my mama' is translated as "Giignan nako akong mama." The only difference is the pronouns used for 'me'. From the first phrase, the 'ko' word works as a 'me/I' in English and from the second phrase, the 'nako' word (root word for 'nako' is 'ko') works as 'something that came from me'.

2) Oh yea! 'Kahibalo' and 'kahibaw' are the same words with different regional accent haha I forgot you visited Bohol so 'kahibaw' is how it works, especially in the Visayas area. I'm from Mindanao :D

3) I'm not so sure about this one haha forgive me. But I tested that prefix with some verbs and it [somehow] works as 'something that you're hoping for'. And I asked a friend about it, you could say it means 'to assume'. But it sometimes depends on the sentence structure because it can also be used in a 'form of relief' like "Maygali/Maygani, ga ring na ang bell, maka-recite unta ko," trans. Thanks goodness the bell rang already, or else I would've to recite.

P.s. As you can see from the sentence I've translated, there's also the word 'untay' aka 'unta' (the root word), and my point is, the word 'unta' and the prefix 'maka' are always together when you're hoping/wishing for something or you wanted something to happen. However, with the second example, there's a bit different with how the meaning works depends on the sentence structure. Overall, 'maka' is in future tense.

4) 'Mag' also works as a prefix for verbs that is in future tense but overall, the word [kind of] means like a noun. I don't know if this makes sense hahaha but like in English, there are also verbs that can be used as a noun right? So yea, I think that's how also 'mag' works. And 'pag' is used as a command or when you tell someone to do the verb.

So it's really important to use the prefixes/suffixes correctly because I observed, you tend just to use the root word, you know, haha, and that would be kind of confusing when you're talking to a native speaker. I hope that helped you :) And you can contact me through facebook cause I'm always online there because of my friend/s haha just search Anya Lev, it has an anime girl for the display picture and cover photo with Gangsta on it :D It's an alias account because I deleted my original one. If you can't find it, you can email me at Anyways, I'm from Los Angeles, California, USA. I'm an authentic bisdak though hahaha I just migrated and originally from Iligan City in Mindanao, southern part of the Philippines. It's so nice to meet you too May! :D

Sometimes, my explanations might be wrong or nearly right, forgive me in advance for that, but I'll try to help you with the best I can! I'll correct it anyways haha ^_^
